Sorry Lazlo, I have to agree with him.
Unless there's a noticable break in the song where the guitarist is clearly sperarating what he's playing from the rest of the band and making his
guitar the main focus, it's not a solo, it's just lead guitar.
For example, David Bowie's Fashion, I'd only consider the guitar to be doing a solo at the 2:50 mark. Throughout the rest of the song it's lead.
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I really like Page Hamilton's solos. Not a normal guitar solo by any means! This is one of my favourites of his....

Solo starts at 1.45, but the whole song is a cracker!

i guess you better tell the rest of the world guys , cos everyone else calls a guitar solo a guitar solo - no matter what .
ive never heard a single person say " wow nice guitar lead man "
unless it was the actual plug in type and was very expensive
dont talk about it , just do it

we'll have to agree to disagree dude, cause you're the only person I've ever seen make that distinction.
Anyone else you'd ask about a solo they can pick out a specific section of the song, not something that gets played over a chorus or c section.....
Also a solo means just that, it's one person...if the rest of the music isn't making way for it, it's not a solo...

A good example of distinguishing lead guitar from an actual guitar solo is Carlos Santana's song Smooth. Loads of lead in that tune, in fact it
carries the melody in the intro and theres loads of tasty fills throughout the verses. Theres a clear cut solo in there after chorus number 2 aswell
if I remember correctly. Theres probably loads more examples and probly better ones, but that just popped into my head!
As for my own favourites, Lyrnrd Skynrd - Freebird, Dire Straits - Walk Of Life, anything by Slash (as someone said, sooo tasty, which in my opinion
MAKES a solo. Regardless of instrument), plus theres also numerous John Petrucci solo's (Dream Theater) which are class.
Guitar is a fantastic instrument, I'm trying to teach myself some basic chords at the moment, just messing about in my bedroom really!! But I have
uber respect for talented guitarists that can mix tasty playing with technicality and musical awareness. (Shame a lot of em' come with a big
compromise in at least one of those areas though...!) But hey nobodies
perfect!

Have to agree with ya Spud, guitar is a fantastic guitar. But in saying that, I'm not a fan of what indie bands do with the guitar. The lead parts
irritate me, only way i can describe it is the opening guitar to Somebody Told Me or anything by Coldplay.
Why can't we go back to the days of great solos like Spud mentioned - Freebird. Or even this song, Carry on My Wayward Son by Kansas used as the theme
song for Supernatural
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBhSQJYLjKQ&feature=fvst
Ignore the cheesy-ish openin, love the song none the less, think its fantastic with all the changes and solos.

It's all valid in my book. It's only music anyway, if some guy wants to play thousands of notes or just one, cool.

In the 70's it just wasn't "cool" to listen to the Carpenters, but secretly everybody loved the guitar outro on their song 'Goodbye to love'

Hate to burst your bubble Lazlo but I have always called what the guiarist does for the "Lead" in a song a "Lead" and not a solo and I have played
with an awful lot of bands over the years. if we are on stage and wanted the guitarist to do a solo, the rest of us would stop playing while he did
his solo. If we are writing a song and 2 guitarists are playing the same riff and we want the lead guitarist to change into something a little more
flashy for several bars, we would ask him to "Throw in a lead". When the rest of band leaves the stage and Angus runs around by himself for 15
minutes, that's what anyone I have ever talked to refers to as a "Solo".
But, on a side note, I HAVE heard others refer to a lead as a solo. But I'm sure there's more then .0001% of us out there. lol

guitar part in a song that is separate from the normal rhythm playing of the song is what is known as the "lead".

err, 99.99999999 % of the rest of the world call it a guitar SOLO
ergo, if they arent wrong , then YOU are. |

I've always know that bit as a bridge. Most of the time it occurs after the 2nd chorus just before the lead (or solo as you people on here seem to
refer to it as) In saying that, I have heard some people refer to it as a middle 8. Definitions aside, I think either term works.
